    Tourist Guide

Connor Burton
Hello,

the tourist guide that you are reading right now is about Anchorage Alaska. Please read and enjoy!

First off, Anchorage is not a very big city; it is about 10x10 miles. Once you live here for a couple of years you start to know a lot of people so it is not uncommon to run into someone you know once in a while.

The activities you do during the day greatly depend on the weather during the season you are visiting. If it is summer you can rent some off road equipment such as ATV’s or Jet-ski’s and go have fun on the back roads of Anchorage or you can hike some of the surrounding mountains such as Flattop or Thunderbird Falls. Fishing and Hunting are also favorites of many people who come up here. During the winter Months you can do lots of things such as snow-machining snowboarding and skiing. You can still hunt and ice-fish in these months too! Once some lakes freeze over you can ice-skate on them and on some hills you can go sledding.

During any season you can go to the Diamond Mall and go ice-skating inside! Since the mall continues underground there is a lot of room for stores big such as the bowling alley, movie-theater, or the gym. Another great mall that you can visit is the Northway Mall which has a very big Food court. So you don’t get cold during the winter seasons and so you can move quickly from the parking garage to the mall these places are usually connected by sky-bridges.

While in Anchorage transport might be a problem but don’t worry you can always just call a taxi. The number for the taxi service is very easy to know and remember because it is just composed of number two. The airport also has a taxi service so you don’t have to worry about forgetting the number when arriving.

The only problems you might encounter during this eventful trip is weather and the local wild animals. From time to time moose and bear will come out of the forests and roam the city or neighborhood. Rarely, you will see a wolf out and about but like I said that is a rare sight. Bears are the same they don’t come out very much and usually only during certain seasons. Other than that you are perfectly fine and no need to worry about the animals they are usually uninterested in people and tend to mind their own business.

So when visiting Anchorage Alaska, try to have fun and enjoy your stay! We have a lot to offer you during any season and in my opinion we have more to offer in winter than any other season. If you don’t like the cold don’t worry just come during the summer and do some outdoor activities that will be sure you warm you up. Anchorage is a very unique city and has a lot of nice people so don’t be shy and enjoy your stay!

Hello Prospective tourists,

Let me introduce you to Alaska, a winter wonderland. There are many things to do for fun like sports. You could go to the Alyeska ski resort and and go skiing, sledding, snowboarding and many other activities.

You could go to The Dome, the largest inflatable sports dome in North America, and play a variety of sports and fun games.

There are also many things you can do in the wilderness. You could go ice-fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and you could even observe the wildlife. If you got here at the right time, maybe you could even see the start of the Iditarod, the longest dog sled race in the world.

You could go to the Denali National Park, where you could see the true Alaska, untouched by human hands. You should remember to pack warm clothing, because here in Alaska, the temperature can drop below -60 degrees farenheit. You could also come during the summer season where it is actually very warm and enjoyable. You wouldn't be able to see the Iditarod or play winter sports, but you could go outside without having to wear three coats. This is also the best time to go fishing as the waters aren't frozen. If you wanted to relax, you could go to century 16 and watch an american movie. You could also go to the dimond center to get something to eat or shop for souvenirs. You will want to bring a good amount of Us dollars because many things here are expensive. There's something for everyone here in Alaska, so come here and enjoy.

Welcome to Alaska!

By Brigitta Kress

If you visit Alaska, there are many wonderful things that you can do. Alaska can be warm one minute and cool the next, so be prepared for weather changes!

Mt. McKinley!

Located in the interior of the state, Mt. McKinley is the tallest mountain on the North American continent! It is a must see for all who come to the state!

Anchorage:
Local Sights

Anchorage is Alaska’s biggest city and has many interesting attractions. You can go shopping at the Fifth Avenue Mall, the Dimond Center Mall and several others if you like shopping. Be careful, motorized vehicles may not be the only things you need to watch for on the roads!

Fun for Kids!

If you want to have some fun with the kids, Anchorage is home to H2Oasis, the 5th largest water park in the United States.

Transportation

There are many types of transportation you can use while visiting this great state. The Alaska Railroad is a favorite way for many who want to see some of the remotest portions of the state.
Another exciting way to see the 49th state is by cruise ship. Many ships travel the inside passage and the passengers see incredible wildlife and unsurpassed beauty.

Hotels

Alaska has many wonderful hotels throughout the state with varying costs and accommodations. The Hotel Captain Cook is a favorite in Anchorage for many travelers.

Restaurants

Alaska has many fast food restaurants such as, Burger King, Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and many others. We also have many nice restaurants such as, Simon and Seaforts, Cattle Company and many more. My two favorite cafés are Starbucks, and The Kaladi Brothers, but there are many more cafés!

Wildlife

Alaska is home to many incredible wild animals! Dahl sheep are easily spotted in the summer along the Seward Highway.

Many folks choose to take a trip through Prince William Sound to see some of the world’s finest aquatic life, such as the Humpback Whale.

My Opinion

I was born in Alaska and my mom was, too! I love living in this beautiful state! I love Alaska even though it is often cold and sometimes dark, it is home to me!

I guess I’ll start with my hometown Anchorage; Anchorage is the biggest city in Alaska. There are many animals in our city, such as moose that are frequently seen roaming around in the city streets. Anchorage even has its own zoo. We also have a ski/snowboard resort within city limits. There are many fun things to do in Anchorage, and I enjoy it very much.

If you enjoy hunting and fishing there are plenty of places to do such. Although the Chuit River Lodge is my favorite. It is only a 30-minute flight from Anchorage. There is great king salmon and silver salmon fishing. There is also wonderful sight seeing here at the Chuit River Lodge.

If you would like to enjoy yourself in a nice Hotel with a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, the Alyeska hotel is definitely my favorite and very well liked. This hotel belongs to the World wide famous Ski/snowboard resort mountain Alyeska.

The performing arts are very popular in Anchorage.
If you like going to plays or operas or musical shows the Alaska Center for the Performing arts has a variety of talent from around the country.

A Look at the Land of the Midnight Sun
By

Imagine if you were able to go to Alaska, Anchorage, Alaska to be exact. What if you only could go for one day, what would you see, what would you do, where would you go. There is so much to do before the sun sets in Anchorage, but that is ok because it stays up longer than almost anywhere else.

First, Make sure you change your currency over. After that, that let us start up the day with the basics, breakfast. There are many places to eat but I would start my day by eating at the top of Hotel Captain Cook, while watching the peaceful inlet with the mountain backdrop. This restaurant’s name is the Crow’s Nest. Once finished with the wonderful meal I would take a walking tour to the local museums, Alaskan owned shops, and/or The Saturday Market. If you are visiting in the spring or in the summer, you may want to bring a raincoat because of the light rain that is usual.

When you stomach starts to rumble for lunch, you will want to head to Gwennie’s Old Alaskan Restaurant. Gwennie’s Old Alaskan Restaurant is a restaurant that serves wonderful old time Alaskan food. One of my friend’s favorites is their hot chili. Get some desert and head to the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

The Alaska Native Heritage Center has many exhibits about Alaskan Natives. There are items that the natives used to survive, and objects for rituals. The Hall of Culture offers different exhibits and they are offering a new exhibit called Native Ways in Changing Times; this Exhibit will be a collection of 35 black and white pictures from Lisa Williams.

Speaking of native items, you should check out The ULU Factory, The people at The ULU Factory hand craft the age old ULU with a modern twist, they will also show you how to use and take care of it. If you want them to, they will help you find the right one for a gift for someone you know back home. If you want to get other Alaskan gifts for your friends back home, you may want to check out the Alaskan Wild Berry they have, Chocolate, smoked or caned Alaskan Salmon, jellies, and many other sweet things. There is also a theater inside and a reindeer farm outside. You will not want to spoil your appetite because dinner is just a few steps away literally the sourdough Mining Company is just across the street.

Once you managed to pull yourself away from the sweet candy and other delights, you should head over to the Sourdough Mining Company and place you order. They have soups, fish, Corn Fritters, steaks, burgers, ribs, and chicken. Once you have downed your meal you have a couple of options, you can get some desert, head over to the reindeer farm, or watch a movie back at Alaskan Wild Berry Products maybe even all three. After you are done you can go back to your hotel room, again I would recommend the Hotel Captain Cook because of the wonderful view and employs. On the way, back to where you are staying you should look at the wonderful midnight sun to see if it is shining.

I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, and I absolutely love living here.
There is a lot to do here all year round. I adore Anchorage and all of Alaska because we have amazing wildlife and breathtaking scenery. If you come to Anchorage we have various hotels where you can stay. My favorite restaurant is Judy’s Café; they have breakfast and dinner, and their food is very home-style.

This first guide would be for someone if they came during the summer.

On the first day, if you were interested in seeing wildlife, and the highest peak in North America, Mt. McKinley, you can go to Denali National Park. It’s about 300 miles away, but it is definitely worth the drive to Trapper Creek. You can either hike around, or pay for a bus tour, which is probably the safer way to go, unless you want to get eaten by a bear.

Denali Park has a huge variety of animals (and so does everywhere else, but this is an amazing experience). It has moose, grizzly bears, lynx, wolves, foxes, caribou, Dall sheep, eagles, owls, etc.

On the second day you are here, I would suggest taking a drive down Turnagain Arm. It’s only about 5 miles away from my house, so my dad and I drive down there a lot. The road stretches against a huge rock wall and it’s right next to the mud flats. (Don’t walk on them they will trap you and swallow you whole!) It also has an amazing view of the mountains.

After a nice drive, you can go to downtown Anchorage and get some food. We are best known for our fresh king crab. But, if you don’t like crab we have lots of varieties of food.

This second guide would be for someone if they came during winter.

One of my favorite things to do in the winter with my friends is go sledding. There are great sledding hills in town. We also like going to the 5th Avenue mall downtown to shop and stay warm; they have an awesome food court! Anchorage just got a new cinema theatre with an IMAX; there is another way to stay warm and entertained.

In town square downtown, there is a park with ice scupltures, at night they light up. And there is an ice skating rink in the center.

If you like skiing or snowboarding, Hilltop is a really fun place to do so. It’s really close to the city, so it’s convenient. My brothers and I love snowboarding here during the winter.

Glad to meet you again! ^^

Well, I'd like to contribute too.
I'm going to tell you about the Fish Village. It's a quite unusual name, isn't it? (: But first some photos:

Really beautiful place. Am I right?)

The Fish Village is one of the most popular attractive place in Kaliningrad which is situated on the Pregol river.
It includes 5-stars hotels, small souvinir shops, cozy cafes and luxury restaurants, lighthouse, beautifully-decorated embankment, drawbridge and River Station. All buildings were made in one style (you can see it on the photos).

This is a perfect place for spending your freetime! You can walk along the embankment, ride on a boat, visit cafe and recieve loads of unforgettable emotions. ^^

Also, many weddings are held there. So, all railing are hung with... locks!)

I hope you liked my little excursion around the Fish Village.)

And I really like the story about Iwakuni city. I have been dreaming to visit Japan for a long time.)

I live in Kaliningrad. This town is situated at the Baltic Sea coast, between Poland and Lithuania. It is quite far away from the rest of Russia.

It was called Konigsberg when it was a part of German, but after the Great Patriotic War it became a Soviet city and was renamed into Kaliningrad in 1946.

Now it is a big and beautiful city, there are 420 thousand people living here. There are many places of interest here, historical and modern ones, such as the Cathedral built in the 14th century. In this building you can hear the winds and organ music. The Cathedral has two organs, including the biggest organ in Europe. There are many museums: the Amber museum, the museum of history and arts, the World Ocean museum; the zoo and botanic garden.

There are also many malls and shopping centers, cafes and restaurants. I don’t really like very much to go shopping, but sometimes I and my family go to the mall, called Europe, at the central square of Kaliningrad.

So, Kaliningrad has a big history, there are lots of interesting places and it’s just a great town! ;-)))

Come and visit us anytime!

Vlada

Hello! My name is Anastasia, i'm from Kaliningrad.

Dear friends from Alaska and Japan, WOW! Places you live are wonderful! That's great! I'd like to visit your places very much.
Friends from Alaska, it's so amazing living in mountains! Snowing weather, skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding are realy exciting and interesting activities. Anyone who lives in Kaliningrad needs to go abroad or go to main Russia to ski or snowboarding. There is 1 slope for winter sports in our region, but it's not realy exciting. I hope you do lots of skiing and snowboarding. :)

Friends from Japan, your sightes are wonderful! Honesty I saw Kintaikyo Bridge earlier, that's really beautiful. I'd like to visit Mikawa Mu Valley very much, that's so interesting and fairytale.

Now that's time to speak about our city and sights of our region.
Our city has long and great history. So that's why it's so different.

That's Drammatic thaetre. It's established in 1947, but the building was built much earlier.

It's House of seamen's culture. It's built in 1875. Now there are different organisasions for children, such as different kinds of dancing clubs, and others. Also children go there to celebrate New Year, i mean there is a big Christmas tree, Father Frost with his daughter Snowmaid.

This is our main sight, it's Cathedral. It was founded in 1333, it's full of mystery and riddles. There is one of the biggest organ in Europe. Last year it was remade and now it's fantastic. Almost every week we have concerts of organ music.

As for recently built sights,` Fish Village, it's built in 2006, there is a lighthouse for visitors, a business center and a hotel.

This is a ship-museum "Vityaz'". It used to be a part if navy.

You can see the main square.

Also Kaliningrad is a sea city, so we have a big port.

But as for me, my favourite place is the Curonian Spit.

It's washed by the Baltic sea on left, and by Curonian Gulf on right. That's a wondeful, amazing, excellent place to stay! The water in the Baltic Sea is rather cold, and it's warm in the Curonian Gulf. There are wonderful sand dunes on both sides. On the Gulf's side they are higher.

There is the place of magnet anomaly on the Curonian Spit. Pine trees grow there in wrong way, their trunks make astonishing, increadible shapes. It's really mysterious place.

Thaks for your attention!

Hello! My name is Atsuko. I live in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi, Japan. My students wrote about traditional events and dishes in Japan. I would like to introduce them to the members of English for You. I hope you will be interested in visiting Japan after reading these.
I would like to add photos after learning how to put them on this website.

Introduction of Traditional Events in Japan
by Iwakuni Sogo High School Students

January 1st “Oshou-gatsu,” New Years Days 3218 Aoi
I’d like to introduce a traditional event in Japan. We have a special event called “Oshou-gatsu” on January 1st.
Relatives gather on the day and eat special food arranged in layered square lacquered boxes.

Children and adults visit shrines and pick up fortune telling cards.

On New Year’s Eve, we eat buckwheat noodles in clear soup. It’s called “toshi-koshi-soba.” “Toshi” means “year.” “Koshi” means “passing.” “Soba” means “buckwheat noodles.” It is very delicious. People hope for long life while eating long noodles.

January 1st “Hatsu-moude” The First Visit to Shrines 33 Ariyasu
I’d like to introduce a traditional event in Japan. We have a special even called “Hatsu-moude”
on January 1st. “Hatsu” means “the first” and “moude” means “visit to a shrine.” At this event, we go to a shrine in our neighborhood.
People pray for many things, such as health and safety of the family. And they buy a charm, or picking up a fortune telling card sold in the shrine. Some people buy fans or arrows of good luck charms and display them in their houses.

February “Setsu-bun” The New Year’s Eve on the Lunar Calendar 3121 Hiroko
I’d like to introduce a traditional event in Japan. We have an annual event called “setsu-bun” in February. It is the turn of seasons, especially the day before the beginning of spring.
In former times, people displayed a head of a sardine on a sprig of Japanese holly tree at the door. They were charms against evils.
We still scatter parched soybeans to drive out bad luck and invite good luck on the day.

March 3rd “Hina-matsuri” Girls’ Day
3113 Misaki
I would like to explain about an event in Japan. It is called “Hina-matsuri” in Japan. It is celebrated on March 3rd.
It has also been called “momo-no-sekku,” which means “celebration of peaches” since it is a season when peach trees blossom.
Dolls of emperor and empress are displayed in “Hina-matsuri.” Girls play chiefly a leading part in the celebration.
A standard dish is “Chirashi-zushi” and “Hina-arare.” “Chirashi-zushi” is sushi rice topped with shredded thin sheets of fried eggs and fish flakes. “Hina-arare” is a deep-fried cake of rice.

34 Daichi
I’d like to introduce a traditional event in Japan. We have a special event called “Hina-matsuri” on March 3rd.
Living rooms or guest rooms of girls’ houses are decorated with dolls of an imperial couple and their servants called “Hina-ningyo” on the day.

Children, especially girls, eat small cubes of dried rice cake called“hina-arare” on the day. The cake is
made from glutinous rice, and sugar is sprinkled over the cake after roasting it.

April “Hana-mi” Cherry Bloosom Viewing 3210 Rina
I’d like to introduce a traditional event in Japan. We have a special event called “Hana-mi” in the beginning of April. There are a lot of cherry trees in parks or along rivers in Japan. We enjoy looking at cherry blossoms with our families, friends, or colleagues.
We eat lunch or dinner together under the cherry trees. Cherry blossoms are very beautiful, but some people seem to enjoy drinking or eating more than looking at the blossoms.

“Tana-bata” Star Festival 3217 Ryoko
I’d like to introduce a traditional event in Japan. There is a traditional event named “Tana-bata” or “the Star Festival” in Japan. Have you heard about it? It’s very wonderful!
At this event, people write their wishes on strips of paper. After writing them, they tie them on bamboo trees and display the trees outside of their houses.
There is a story for the star festival: A Chinese legend says that Altair, a cattleman, and vega, a weaver, are in love, but they can see each other only once a year at the night of July 7th.

November 15th “Shichi-go-san” Celebration for Seven, Five, and Three-year-olds 33 Akina
I’d like to introduce a traditional event in Japan. We have a special event called “Shichi-go-san,” which means “seven, five, three” on November 15th.
At this event, children put on “kimono,” Japanese traditional clothes and visit a shrine.
Parents with seven-year-old children, five-year-old children, and three-year-old children celebrate their children’s happiness, development, good health and long life.
We eat special food called “Chitose-ame,” which means “one-thousand-year-old candies.” They are long sticks of candies made from sugar.

Introduction of Japanese Dishes by Iwakuni Sogo High School Students

Rice Balls 3328 Miki
One of popular dishes in Japan is a rice ball.
This is how you make it:
First, let’s prepare cooked rice and “nori,” dried seaweed.
Next, put ingredients like pickled sour plum, cooked “konbu,” which is called kelp in English, canned tuna, etc in a handful of rice and grasp it to make a ball.
Last, wrap the ball with “nori” and it is ready.
The rice ball is one of the traditional dishes in Japan. It is often served in a box lunch for school excursions and sports day.

Niku-jaga Morita Yuri
I’d like to introduce Japanese pork stew called “niku-jaga.”
First, you get several ingredients together: soup stock, sugar, soysauce, potatoes, pork, a carrot, an onion, and “ito-konnyaku,” which look like noodles.
Then, cut an onion, “ito-konnyaku” potatoes, a carrot, and pork into one-bite size.
Next, fry “ito-konnyaku” in a frying pan without oil.
After that, fry pork over medium heat. When the meat whitens, add vegetables and “ito-konnyaku” and fry them quickly.
Last, put all ingredients in a pressure cooker and heat for one minute after boiling.

Miso-soup 3128 Serika
My favorite Japanese dish is miso-soup.
This is how you make it:
First, cut tofu, or soybean curd, into small cubes.
Second, soak seaweed called “wakame” in water, drain it well, and cut it into one-bite size.
Third, pour soup stock in a pan and heat it.
Then, put “miso”, or fermented soybeans, in the pan while dissolving it with some soup.
Last, add seaweed and tofu into the soup.
Heat it until it almost boils.

Tako-yaki 3320 Ayaka
My favorite Japanese dish is “tako-yaki.” “Tako” means “an octopus.” “Yaki” means “fry.
This is how you make it:
First, you get several ingredients together: an octopus, flour, oil, water, a long green onion, dried bonito shavings or flakes of dried fish, green laver or flakes of seaweed, mayonnaise, “okonomi” sauce made from vegetables and fruits.
Then mix flour and water.
Next, pour the mixture into a special frying pan with small dents and put pieces of an octopus on the mixture.
After that, turn over the balls of the mixture.
Last, spread “okonomi” sauce, mayonnaise, green laver, dried bonito shavings, a pieces of long green onion over the small balls of “tako-yaki.”

Dear foreigners, Our lovely city called Kaliningrad is the most European city in Russia. We offer you to visit our major destinations: a shopping mall called Europe, where many young people come to spend free time and money, leisure parks such as Kalinin Park, Kant Park and Yunost' Park, Lower and Upper Lakes, and last but not least - the Curonian Spit.
Yunost' Park is the place for kids to go on different rides. It's the perfect place for families to take long walks in the park. You can feed ducks and squirrels. There is a pond in the park where everything becomes romantic during twilight.

The Upper Lake is near Yunost' Park. It has many benches and a fountain where kids play. There is a separate sidewalk for bicyclists and for people. Everything there is quite new.

The Curonian Spit is a National Park that belongs to Lithuania and Kaliningrad Oblast. If you stay there for a couple of days you get the chance to see the stunning sunset on the beach. It has the most breathtaking veiws of nature, forests, different plants and animals, the sand dunes, the Baltic Sea, and the Curonian Lagoon, so you definitely have to pack your photo camera for this trip.

Hello my dears!
I'm very pleased to see so many messages in the theme. Our friends from foreign countries have an opportunity to get to know Kaliningrad better. And we,Russians, can make opinions about Alaska, Japan and other places where our pen friends live. I think phrases like this:
"I want to visit your cities so much!!!!! You live in wonderful places!!!"
are good results of our work.
So,thank you! It was really interesting. I hope we'll receive more presentations.
